Here is somehting incredbile. An 1892 dissertation on Keats (arguing for the pervasive influence of Greek and Latin poetry on him; something modern schoalrs contest), wirtten in Latin. Whenever it quotes Keats, it does so so in Latin translation. See p. 93-94, for example, for a comeplete translation of the Greecian Urn Ode.

The sons of bitches in Isis have comepltely destroyed the Assyrian antiquities in the museums in Mosu land Nineveh (that is, only the large items, like the winged bull and the statue of Ashurbanial--the smaller items have already been sold on the black market in violation of their own religious law).

Roman Trivia

Mme. Malkhos has become obsessed with playing some trivial trivia game on her phone. Not satisfied with being among the top ten players in Poetry int he US, she just inveighed me to feed her the answers in the Greek and Rome categories. One of our opponents claimed to be Pope Francis; which I might have discounted except he defeated me.

In this country we have to suffer thugs assaulting Federal officers, then go on triumphal tours of the news stations displaying their Neo-Nazi sympathies, but in such a way that the cowards (who proclaimed their intention to hide behind their wives and daughters if the government starts to shoot back) could feebly try to deny it.

The Gospel of Jesus' Wife

From Depuydt's analysis in the current HTR:
"I believe that there can only be one explanation for the complete dependence of
the Text on the Gospel of Thomas: forgery. What other motive could there be for
taking, for example, the text of the US Declaration of Independence, picking out a
few phrases here and there, and changing a new resulting composite text slightly
so that it says something different from what the original text says, perhaps even
that the British actually won the war?"
This comparison may through some light on the persuasiveness of his argument:
"I believe that there can only be one explanation for the complete dependence of
the Text on the Gospel of Thomas: forgery. What other motive could there be for
taking, for example, the text of Mark, picking out a few phrases here and there,
and changing a new resulting composite text slightly so that it says something
different from what the original text says, perhaps even that Jesus rose from the dead?"

Our Lady of the Snows

At the local shrine where the faithful go to stare at the sun, they rig a huge Christmas light show each year--one can see the whole Nativity recreated in light bulbs from your car. They also had a laser show. The soundtrack was Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody rewritten as a Marian hymn. The crudely rendered cartoon images showed scenes such as the crucified Jesus dancing in time to the music (in a way more banal and more monstrous than Kubrick or Monty Python achieved) and the burning red globule of Jehovah's seed flying through space and transforming into the Christ child, while the singers on the sound track managed to call out Obey! repeatedly. One could not create more horrible blasphemy on purpose (to say nothing of the kitsch), yet whole committees of the pious had approved this as worshipful.

When we drove by the local Catholic Church with its statues on the lawn representing the Nativity, Madeline described as a "life-sized Jesus play set."

Rare trip to a Barnes & Nobles yesterday--the only actual bookstore left (except for a few local independents--we have 1 used bookstroe of any significance and 1 mixed new and used). I had determined, since I was there, to buy Mann--either The Magic Mountain or Joseph and his Brothers. Nothing by Mann on the shelf. Then I looked for Borges; also nothing.
